USAFA, Colo. -

In front of a raucous crowd at the Cadet Natatorium, the 20th-ranked Air Force water polo team earned a 14-10 victory over conference foe Cal Baptist Friday evening to open the Air Force Tournament.

Sophomore Kevin Womack (Redlands, Calif.) tallied a team-high three goals to lead the Falcons, while junior Dominic Vicino (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) registered four assists.

Cal Baptist took the early lead, scoring a 5-meter penalty goal in the first minute of the contest. Less than two minutes later, the Lancers increased their margin to 2-0 before Air Force got on the board with a 6-on-5 goal from Jantz Johnson (Jr., Murrieta, Calif.) with just over a minute remaining in the opening period.

A man-up goal by Josh Stedman (Sr., Brea, Calif.) 35 seconds into the second quarter tied the game at 2-2, while Andy Santala (So., Aliso Viejo, Calif.) gave Air Force its first lead of the game a minute later. While Cal Baptist came back to take the lead with 51 seconds remaining in the period, senior Brad Duncan (Fresno, Calif.) tallied his first goal of the game with 29 seconds on the clock to bring the score to 5-5 at the intermission.

The Falcons (2-7, 1-0) began to pull away in the third period, outscoring the Lancers 4-1 in the quarter to take a three-goal advantage into the final stanza. Cal Baptist went on a run early in the fourth quarter, cutting the margin to 10-9 with 5:41 remaining, but Air Force responded with three straight scores, including back-to-back goals by Santala and Robby Stiefel (Fr., San Clemente, Calif.), to regain control.

Air Force converted on four of its seven 6-on-5 opportunities in the game, while the Lancers were 5-of-8 on their extra-man chances.

The Falcons continue action in the Air Force Tournament tomorrow, as they take on Pomona-Pitzer at 2:30 p.m., before concluding the weekend with a game versus Mercyhurst Sunday morning at 11:00.
