No. 20 Air Force Wins Two on Opening Day of Slugfest Tournament

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - With two wins against conference opponents, the 20th-ranked Air Force water polo team got out to a solid start at the Slugfest Tournament Saturday, defeating host UC Santa Cruz, 11-6, and Occidental, 13-7. The Falcons improve to 4-7 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Western Water Polo Association.
Air Force got out to a 3-1 lead against the host Banana Slugs in the first game of the day, and never looked back. After holding a 6-3 advantage at the half, the Falcons outscored UCSC, 5-3, after the break, en route to their third conference win of the season.
Junior Jason Fung (Honolulu, Hawaii), who had not scored a goal in the first nine games of the season, led the Falcons with three goals against the Slugs. Classmates Alex Churnside (Orange, Calif.) and Jack Hines (Riverside, Calif.) added two goals each, while Kevin Williams (Sr., River Forest, Ill.), Bobby Geiger (So., Buellton, Calif.), Tyler Hewko (Sr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Matt Versage (So., Merced, Calif.) all added the remaining scores for Air Force. Goalkeeper David Ostrom (Jr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) notched four saves in the game, while also adding five steals and three assists.
Facing Occidental in the second game of the day, Air Force again led by a 3-1 margin after one period, and still held a 7-4 advantage at intermission. The Falcons never trailed in the second half, taking the 13-7 victory.
Geiger was Air Force's leading scorer against the Tigers, tallying four goals, while Fung added three scores for the second-straight contest. Also scoring for the Falcons were Williams, Churnside, Hines, Versage, Miles McMullan (Sr., Irvine, Calif.) and Andrew Strawbridge (So., San Jose, Calif.) with one goal each. Ostrom recorded five saves in three periods of action, while freshman Danny Harold (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) notched three saves in the fourth quarter.
Air Force wraps up action at the Slugfest Tournament tomorrow with games against conference foes Cal Lutheran and No. 16 Redlands. The Falcons face Cal Lutheran at 8:00 a.m. (PT), before taking on Redlands at 1:20 p.m.
