No. 20 Air Force Splits Two Games at NorCal Invitational

PLEASANT HILL, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Air Force water polo split a pair of contests Sunday to place 15th at the annual NorCal Invitational. The Falcons dropped a 15-7 decision to 11th-ranked UC San Diego before picking up their first victory of the season, an 18-12 win over Diablo Valley College.
The Falcons struggled early in their first game of the day, trailing 8-0 against the Tritons late in the second period before Kevin Womack (So., Redlands, Calif.) tallied Air Force's only goal of the first half. While the second half was played more evenly, the Falcons never got closer than six goals the rest of the way.
Air Force was led by Josh Stedman (Sr., Brea, Calif.) and Dominic Vicino (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) with two goals each. The Falcons, who tallied five of their seven goals on extra-man opportunities, were able to hold UCSD scoreless on five 6-on-5 chances.
In their first game of the day, the Falcons (0-6) fell into an early hole against the Golden Bears. Cal took a 6-0 lead after one period and held a 8-0 advantage before junior Dominic Vicino (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) put Air Force on the board with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter.
The Falcons had a stronger performance in their second game, leading Diablo Valley College from the start, with Stedman getting on the board less than two minutes into the contest. With a 4-3 advantage after the first period, the Falcons began to pull away in the second quarter, taking a 9-5 lead at the half before earning the 18-12 victory.
Stedman led Air Force against the Vikings with eight goals and five steals, while Womack pitched in four scores.
The Falcons return to action Sept. 27-29, as they host four teams in the Air Force Tournament.
