Sept. 15, 2012
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The 16th-ranked Air Force water polo team dropped both of its contests Saturday at the NorCal Tournament, falling to No. 3 Cal, 19-2, while coming up short in an 8-7 double overtime loss to No. 11 UC San Diego.
In its first game of the day, the Falcons (3-3, 3-1 WWPA) were outmatched by the third-ranked Golden Bears. Air Force scored one goal in each of the first two periods to go into the intermission trailing 7-2. Meanwhile, Cal outscored the Falcons 12-0 after the break, including a nine-goal fourth quarter. Scoring the lone goals for Air Force against the Bears were sophomore Jantz Johnson (Murrieta, Calif.) and senior Brad Rajchel (Orlando, Fla.), while senior goalie Mike Fish (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was credited with 14 stops in three and a half quarters of action.
Taking on conference foe UC San Diego in its second game of the day, Air Force fell into an early deficit against the Tritons, trailing 2-0 after one period and 4-2 at the half. However, the Falcons came back in the second half, outscoring UCSD 5-3 to force overtime. While neither team was able to score in the first overtime session, the Tritons broke the stalemate with a sudden victory goal in the second overtime period.
Senior Dillon Fisher (Orange, Calif.) and junior Josh Stedman (Brea, Calif.) led Air Force against UC San Diego with two scores each, while Andrew Hamilton (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Max Reilly (Jr., Davis, Calif.) and Garrett Womack (Sr., Redlands, Calif.) all added goals for the Falcons. Meanwhile, Fish had an outstanding contest, recording 20 saves against the Tritons.
The Falcons close out competition at the NorCal Tournament tomorrow, beginning at 9:25 a.m., when they take on 18th-ranked Concordia. Air Force will then face either No. 14 Santa Clara or Pomona-Pitzer in its final game of the weekend.
