Buck Opens National Indoor Championships On Thursday
Nov. 2, 2005 Air Force senior Shannon Buck will face Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame in the first round of the 32-player ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships on Thursday, Nov. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Buck received an automatic entry to the Indoor Championships by advancing to the finals of the ITA Mountain Region Championships.
Buck, who lost in the regional final to Luke Shields of Boise State, 6-2, 6-3, is the first Air Force player to participate in the National Indoor tournament. He is 11-3 in singles this fall and also advanced to the finals of the Denver Invitational and the round of 16 at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Men's Tennis Championships. Buck is the only player from the Mountain West Conference in the men's singles and doubles draws.
The nation's 28th-ranked player, Buck has defeated four players in the top 50 this fall, including a decisive, 6-2, 6-2, victory over No. 15 Tom Eklund of South Carolina in the first round of the All-American Championships. He also beat No. 31 Rohan Gaijar of Arkansas, 6-2, 6-0 (2nd round, All-American Championships), No. 44 Adam Holmstrom of Denver, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 (semifinals, Mountain Region Championships) and No. 47 Marko Bundalo of Colorado, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 (round of 16, Mountain Region Championships).
Parbhu is ranked 77th-in the country and has a 10-1 singles record this fall. The winner of the match will face the victor of the match between top-seeded Ryler DeHeart of Illinois and Mislav Hizak of Embry-Riddle in the round of 16 on Friday.
