Air Force Posts Strong Showing at Men's Tennis Regionals
Oct. 25, 2001 Two of Air Force's four singles entries are still alive after the first two rounds of the Omni Hotels Western Regional Men's Tennis Championships, which began Wednesday with more than 140 players at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. Junior Eric Pittman, the 11th seed, enjoyed a first-round bye before defeating Don Williams of Weber State 7-5, 7-6(4). Sophomore Justin Mancinelli won his two matches, beating Hector Mucharraz of Idaho, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3 and Owen Suagee of Eastern Washington 6-2, 6-1. Seniors Kyle Rainey and Chris Zielinski won their first-round matches before losing in the second-round. Rainey downed Daniel Salvato of Weber State 6-1, 6-1 before dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to No. 5-seed Carlos Lozano of BYU. Zielinski, meanwhile, came from behind to beat Rasmus Larsen of San Diego State 1-6, 7-6, 6-2, then fell to the ninth-seeded David Kowalski of New Mexico 6-3, 6-4. Pittman faces Utah's Corrie Scheepers in third-round action on Thursday, Oct. 25, while Mancinelli plays the 15th seed, Anton Rudjuk of BYU. In doubles action, Rainey and Mancinelli combined to defeat Steve Peterson and Jason Trask of Utah State 8-2, while Pittman and Zielinski, seeded 10th, received a first-round bye.
Two more rounds of main-draw singles and one round of doubles will be played on Thursday. The tournament, which features players from 16 teams in the western region, runs through Sunday, Oct. 28.
