Shannon Buck Continues to Roll at ITA Region Championships
Oct. 24, 2003 Sophomore Shannon Buck won his third consecutive straight-set match Friday at the ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Peter Bjork of Colorado. Buck, the top-seeded player in the tournament, will face eighth-seed Matias Silva of Boise State on Saturday at 10 a.m. Silva defeated Luia Avila of New Mexico State, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 16. Senior Justin Mancinelli, junior Tyler McClung and sophomore Trevor Johnson are still alive in the consolation bracket. Mancinelli won two matches on Friday, one by default and the other after Tyler Lyon of New Mexico State had to retire in the second set with Mancinelli winning 7-5, 1-0. McClung defeated Jake Berriochoa of Montana State, 7-6, 6-1, while Johnson plays his first consolation match on Saturday. AFA's three doubles teams were in action on Friday as well, but two suffered losses in the main draw. Buck and McClung, the tournament's No. 5 seed, lost to Hans Peter Gaber and Niki Popovic of Denver, 8-5, while Johnson and Mancinelli fell to the second-seeded team of Guillaume Bouvier and Thomas Schoeck of Boise State, 8-2.
