Falcons Open Region Championships on Wednesday

    The Air Force men's tennis team will send eight players to the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Darling Tennis Center. The Falcons will join players from 16 other schools in the region for the five-day tournament.

    Juniors Lance Wilhelm, Stephen Katrein and Vinni Lodolo, sophomores Alex Grubbs and Steven Young and freshmen Joey Brandt, Landon Kinsey and Grant Taylor will participate in the singles competition. Wilhelm won the top singles flight at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic a couple of weeks ago, defeating UNM's Ben Dunbar 7-6, 6-3 in the finals. Grubbs, meanwhile, won the "B" flight at the same tournament by beating Robin Chou of Arizona, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in the title match.

    Wilhelm and Taylor will pair up as one doubles team after finishing second at the Balloon Fiesta Classic. They have a 3-4 record so far this fall. Grubbs and Kinsey went 2-1 at the UNM Tourney and lost to Wilhelm and Taylor in the semis. Young and Brandt will play together as will Katrein and Lodolo.

    The other Mountain Region teams joining the Falcons in Las Vegas are BYU, Boise State, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, UNLV, Utah, Utah State and Weber State.
