Oct. 9, 2003
Air Force sophomore Shannon Buck pulled off a major upset Thursday in the first round of the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men's Tennis All-American Championships, defeating eighth-seeded Jesse Witten of Kentucky, 7-6(4), 7-6(8). Buck, unseeded in the main draw of 64 players, lost his second-round match to Michael Calkins of Illinois, 7-6(4), 6-2 and was eliminated from the tournament.
Buck, the 45th-ranked player in the country in the NCAA preseason rankings, won his fifth match of the fall against Witten, who advanced to the round of 32 at last year's NCAA Singles Championships and entered the fall season ranked No. 9 in the nation. Buck was defeated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year by Oklahoma State's Mark Van Elden.
The rest of the Air Force team is in Albuquerque, N.M., to compete at the Balloon Fiesta Tournament Oct. 10-12.
