Silver defeates Blue, 4-3, in second annual intrasquad match
Aug. 28, 2011
The Air Force men's tennis team kicked off its 2011-12 season Friday afternoon with the second annual Blue/Silver match. Due to injuries, the Falcons only played two doubles and four singles matches. After deadlocking at 3-all, each team selected a player to play in a tiebreak and freshman Joey Brandt defeated sophomore Steven Young, 9-7, to give Silver the 4-3 victory.
"It was nice to see our guys in a match situation with pressure this early in the season," said head coach Dan Oosterhous. "We also had great support from our mission partners Cadet Squadron-24 and DFR to really make this a super event."
The two teams split the two doubles matches. Junior Lance Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor opened the match with an 8-3 win over Brandt and fellow freshman Landon Kinsey to give the Blue a 1-0 lead. Junior Stephen Katrein and sophomore Ali Rizvi evened it up for Silver with an 8-6 victory over Young and junior Vinni Lodolo.
Young and Taylor won singles matches for the Blue team, while Brandt and Katrein posted wins for Silver, setting up the tiebreaker between Brandt and Young.
"Today was a great start to the fall season." Said senior team captain Michael Tope. "Everyone across the board battled today and the intensity was high."
The Falcons host their annual alumni match on Saturday, Sept. 10, then begin the fall tournament season on Friday, Sept. 23 at the Denver Invitational.
