Returners Defeat Freshmen, 5-2, in First Annual Blue/Silver Match
Aug. 27, 2010
The Air Force men's tennis team kicked off its 2010-11 season Friday with the first annual Blue/Silver match, pitting the upperclassmen against the freshmen. The Blue team, led by sophomore Lance Wilhelm and senior Taylor Soster, won two of three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests to capture a 5-2 victory.
"The level of tennis was extremely high today, especially considering this was the first official day of our season," said second-year head coach Dan Oosterhous. "The upperclassmen proved that experience matters. They were more aggressive in doubles and won three 3rd set tiebreakers in singles to pull out the team win. It was a great start to our season."
The Blue team won the doubles point by winning at the top two spots. The No. 3 match was off the court first when the Silver team duo of Steven Young and Ali Rizvi defeated junior Mike Tope and sophomore Stephen Katrein, 8-4. Wilhelm and Soster then barely won the No. 1 match, 9-8, over Lucas Marin-Salcedo and Alex Grubbs, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5. Senior Alex Beaussart and sophomore Sam Barnes then clinched the point for the Blue team with a 9-7 win over Alex Lineberry and Danny Gies.
In singles play, Young downed Tope, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6 to even the score at 1-all, then Wilhelm defeated Marin-Salcedo, 7-5, 6-2 at the top spot to give the Blue team a 2-1 lead. The other four singles matches all went to a third-set tiebreaker, with the Blue winning three of them. Soster defeated Grubbs, 6-1, 5-7, (10-5) at No. 2, Beaussart downed Lineberry, 6-2, 2-6, (10-4) at No. 3 and Katrein rallied to beat Rizvi, 2-6, 6-3, (10-8) at No. 4. Gies won the No. 5 match for the Silver team, 6-3, 4-6, (10-7) over Barnes.
