The Air Force men's tennis team kicks off its 2012-13 season on Friday, August 24 with the third annual Blue-Silver intrasquad match, beginning at 4 p.m., at the USAFA outdoor varsity courts. The team will be divided into two squads and play a dual match, which is free and open to the public.
"We are excited to be hosting our 3rd annual Blue-Silver event," said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. "We have a very experienced team this year with eight returning upperclassmen, while our two freshmen will be pushing them for lineup spots. I expect this to be a very competitive match and will help prepare us for what we face in the fall season."
The Blue team consists of seniors Lance Wilhelm and Stephen Katrein, junior Steven Young, sophomore Grant Taylor and freshman Andrew Parks. The Silver team will be juniors Alex Grubbs, Andy Jackson, Alex Lineberry and Ali Rizvi and freshman Jack McCullers.
The Falcons finished the 2011-12 season ranked No. 9 in the Mountain Region, the highest regional finish for the team since finishing the 2005 season in the No. 7 spot. Individually, Wilhelm finished the campaign ranked 14th in singles and 9th in doubles with Taylor. The duo was also named to the Mountain West all-conference team for doubles while Wilhelm made the team for singles.
Air Force opens the 2012 fall season at the Denver Invitational, a three-day tournament beginning Friday, Sept. 21.
