May 8, 2014
The Air Force men's tennis program honored the 2013-14 team at its annual banquet Wednesday night. Senior Alex Grubbs was awarded the team’s highest honor as Most Valuable Player.
Grubbs, from Fort Worth, Texas, led the Falcons with 19 overall singles wins in ’13-14, including a 16-7 dual match record and a 15-5 mark at the No. 4 position. He posted the team’s only victory over a regionally-ranked opponent, defeating 17th-ranked Mitch McDaniels of New Mexico. He tied for second on the team with 17 overall doubles wins and was 15-7 with sophomore Jack McCullers. Grubbs also captured the Lightning Bolt Award, given to the player with the most combined dual match wins with 31.
Sophomore Jack McCullers won the team's Most Improved Player award and fellow sophomore Andrew Parks won the Rich Gugat "Attitude is Everything" Award. Senior Alex Lineberry earned the Iron Bolt Award for excellence in strength and conditioning.
Air Force finished the season with a 13-12 record, its first winning season since 2006 and the most wins in one campaign since 2005. The Falcons also won their first regular-season Mountain West dual match since 2003, defeating league-newcomer Utah State, and achieved their highest national ranking in program history at No. 63. In addition, Air Force defeated 49th-ranked BYU 4-3 at home early in the season, its first win over a ranked team since beating No. 55 Nebraska 4-3 on Feb. 4, 2005.
It was also announced that current junior Grant Taylor will serve as team captain for the 2014-15 season.
