Lance Wilhelm Named MVP at Men's Tennis Banquet

The Air Force men's tennis program honored the 2012-13 team at its annual banquet Friday night. Senior Lance Wilhelm was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the fourth consecutive season, becoming just the second player in program history to win four MVP awards.
Wilhelm, from Gig Harbor, Wash., won a team-high 21 singles matches this season, including 15 at the No. 1 position. He was selected to the Mountain West all-conference team for singles and doubles for the second straight season and held a 22-11 doubles record with sophomore Grant Taylor, who also earned all-MW honors and won the Rich Gugat "Attitude is Everything" Award for the second straight season.
Wilhelm, who finished the regular season ranked 82nd in the country, also captured the Lightning Bolt Award, given to the player with the most combined dual match wins. He won 15 singles and 17 doubles matches for 32 total wins, the most in one season since Shannon Buck won 32 in 2005-06. Buck is the only other Falcon tennis player to win four team MVP awards. In addition, Wilhelm won the Iron Bolt Award for dedication to the strength and conditioning program for the second straight year.
Freshman Andrew Parks won the team's Most Improved Player award after posting an 8-7 dual match singles record, including three wins at the No. 5 position and four at the No. 6 spot.
Air Force finished the season with an 11-13 overall record, the fifth straight season with at least 10 wins. Two of the victories came over teams that won their conference will participate in the 2013 NCAA Tournament (UC-Santa Barbara and UMKC) and five wins came against teams from the Mountain Region, the most in one season since 2007.
It was also announced that junior Steven Young will serve as team captain for the 2013-14 season.
