For the second consecutive year, Lance Wilhelm and Grant Taylor were named to the all-Mountain West tennis team Thursday night at the conference’s banquet in Colorado Springs. Wilhelm was selected for singles and paired with Taylor for an all-conference doubles tandem.
Wilhelm, a senior from Gig Harbor, Wash., is the first Falcon to earn back-to-back honors for singles since Shannon Buck in 2005 and ’06. Wilhelm finished the season 21-11 overall in singles and 15-7 at the No. 1 position this season. He posted a 3-3 record against nationally-ranked opponents, including two wins over Mountain West Player of the Year Andrew Bettles of Boise State.
Meanwhile, Wilhelm and Taylor, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, Utah, were 22-11 overall in doubles and 17-7 at the No. 1 spot. They posted a 3-3 mark against Mountain West opponents and defeated Bettles and Nathan Sereke of Boise State at the No. 1 spot Thursday during the Mountain West Championships. They are the first Air Force doubles team to earn consecutive all-league honors since Chris and Greg Zielinski in 2001 and ‘02.
Bettles, ranked 30th in the country, was named Player of the Year, while UNLV’s Gilad Berman earned MW Freshman of the Year honors.
