AFA Men's Tennis splits with Centenary, Gustavus Adolphus
The Air Force men's tennis team split a pair of home matches Friday, Mar. 2. The Falcons defeated Centenary College, 7-0, then lost a heartbreaker to Gustavus Adolphus, 4-3.
Air Force won all six singles matches in straight sets against Centenary College, and won two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Eric Pittman led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Todd Killen. Junior Kyle Rainey had the toughest match at No. 2 singles, but pulled out a 6-4, 7-6 decision over Jimmy Allen.
Juniors Chris and Greg Zielinski ran their record to 9-0 with an 8-6 victory over Killen and Allen at No. 1 doubles. Centenary captured the No. 3 doubles match, 9-8.
Gustavus Adolphus, a Division III team from St. Peter, Minn., took four of the six singles matches after losing the doubles point. Gustavus captured the top three singles matches, including a 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 victory by Kevin Whipple over AFA's Rene Ramirez at the No. 3 position.
Chris Zielinski and Justin Mancinelli won their singles matches for the Falcons at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
The Zielinski's suffered their first doubles defeat this season at the hands of Whipple and Eric Butorac, 8-6. Mancinelli and Pittman wan at No. 2, 8-4, while Ramirez and Kyle Rainey won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles to give the Falcons the doubles point.
Air Force, 6-4 this season, returns to action Saturday, Mar. 3 with a pair of home matches against the University of Montana at 8:30 a.m., and CU-Colorado Springs at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Cadet Gymnasium's Indoor Courts.
