The 63rd-ranked Air Force men’s tennis team plays two service-academy matches this weekend in Charleston, S.C. The Falcons, who achieved their highest national ranking ever this week, will face The Citadel on Saturday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m., and Army on Sunday, March 2 at 10 a.m. (ET).
“Our guys have been working hard all season and the ranking is a nice reward,” said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. “But we all know it’s just a number and we have to prove ourselves each week against every opponent. We’re excited about the opportunity we have this weekend to play against two fellow military schools and I expect great matches.”
Air Force, 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West, is coming off a 7-0 victory over Portland State at home last Saturday. Seniors Alex Grubbs and Steven Young lead the team with 10 singles wins apiece and Grubbs holds a team-best 7-1 record in dual matches, all at the No. 4 spot.
The Falcons have been outstanding in doubles so far this spring, posting a 20-6 record in duals. Junior Grant Taylor and freshman Lucas Fumagalli are 7-1 (6-1 at the No. 3 position), while Grubbs and sophomore Jack McCullers are 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Young and fellow senior Andy Jackson are 5-3 at the No. 1 position.
