Falcons Finish Rainy Day One at Mountain Region Tourney
Oct. 20, 2010
After a rainstorm delayed the beginning of the 2010 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, the Air Force men's tennis team finally took the court for an abbreviated day at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
Three of AFA's four doubles team played in the round of 64 Wednesday morning, with two of them claiming wins. Senior Taylor Soster and freshman Alex Grubbs won their fifth straight match, defeating Alex Bull and Kyle Lynch of UNLV, 8-3, while sophomore Stephen Katrein and Alex Lineberry downed Kristian Kuharsky and Victor Ouvrard of Nevada, 8-6
In singles play, only four of the eight Falcons hit the court, with freshman Alex Lineberry posting the team's lone victory, a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Markus Schlueter of Montana State. Sophomore Lance Wilhelm dropped a heartbreaking three-set match, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 to Jacob Asplund of Utah State, while Katrein and freshman Steven Young each fell in straight sets.
The other four Falcons were in progress when the rains came again and washed out the rest of the day. The tournament will resume Thursday morning.
This event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
