Senior Lance Wilhelm won two more singles matches on Friday and advanced to the semifinals at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The last Air Force player to advance this far in the singles draw at the region tournament was Shannon Buck, who made it to the finals in 2005.
Wilhelm, the sixth-seeded player in the tournament, defeated Nathan Sereke of Boise State, the 11th-seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the round of 16, then downed Charlie Alvarado of UNLV, 7-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals. He will face the tournament's No. 1 seed, Enej Bonin of Denver, in the semis on Saturday.
Junior Alex Grubbs is still alive in the consolation bracket after winning a pair of matches on Friday as well. He opened the day with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Markus Schlueter of Montana State in the third round, then defeated teammate Steven Young, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. Grubbs will face Weber State's Todd Fought in the quarters on Saturday. Sophomore Grant Taylor posted the biggest victory in his career at Air Force when he beat fourth-seeded Jadon Phillips of New Mexico, 7-5, 6-4 in the third round of consolation. Phillips is nationally ranked and had never lost to Air Force before today. Taylor then lost in the fourth round of consolation to Moez Charqui of Nevada, 6-4, 6-4.
Two Air Force doubles teams are still alive in the consolation bracket. The fourth-seeded duo of Wilhelm and Taylor defeated Filip Fichtel and Jake Knox of Idaho, 8-5, and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday, as will Grubbs and fellow junior Andy Jackson, who beat Brian Foley and Scott Sears of Boise State, 8-6, on Friday.
