Falcons Complete Day One at Mountain Regionals

Junior Lance Wilhelm and sophomore Alex Grubbs advanced to the second round of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev. Wilhelm, ranked 14th, beat Diego Campos of Montana State, 6-1, 7-5, while Grubbs defeated Northern Colorado's Brandon Lupo, 6-3, 7-6. Freshmen Joey Brandt and Landon Kinsey each lost his first-round match, but won in the first round of the consolation bracket. Brandt advanced when Denver's Max Krammer had to withdraw due to an injury, while Kinsey downed Kenny Dodd of Montana State, 7-5, 6-4. In doubles action, the team of juniors Stephen Katrein and Vinni Lodolo won its first-round match, beating Dave Hintze and Caio Poitena of Weber State, 8-1. Brandt and sophomore Steven Young lost an exciting, 9-7 match to Conor Berg and Carl Ho from Mountain West rival New Mexico while Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor, the 11th-seeded team at the tournament, were upset by Marius Cirstea and Andrew Dobbs of Idaho, 8-5, in the first round.
