The Air Force men's tennis team completed the first day of the 2012 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev. Sophomore Grant Taylor posted the only win for Air Force, winning his first-round singles match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Justin Archer of Utah.
Taylor will face the tournament's 17th-seeded player, Max Krammer of Denver, in the second round on Thursday. Taylor will also play doubles with senior Lance Wilhelm on Thursday, facing Victor Ouvrard and Fernando Sunago of Nevada in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. The Falcon duo is seeded fourth at the tournament.
In other singles action on Wednesday, junior Steven Young took the 25th-seed Mitch McDaniels of New Mexico to three sets before falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while fellow juniors Alex Grubbs, Andy Jackson, Ali Rizvi and Alex Lineberry all fell in straight sets and will play in the consolation round on Thursday. Wilhelm, the sixth-seeded singles player, will play Javier Martin-Morillas of Montana State in the second round on Thursday.
In doubles, Young and Rizvi dropped their first-round match, 8-6, to Tanner Dance and Matt Sweet of Utah State, while Grubbs and Jackson had a first-round bye and will play Charlie Alvarado and Willie Sublette of UNLV on Thursday.
