Grubbs and Young Advance at Region Championships

Seniors Alex Grubbs and Steven Young advanced to the round of 32 in the singles draw of the 2013 ITA Mountain Region Championships Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Both players also won their first round doubles match on Wednesday, Grubbs with sophomore Andrew Parks and Young with freshman Lucas Fumagalli.
Grubbs opened the tournament by rallying to defeat Sebastian Schneider of Utah State, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in the first round, then disposed of New Mexico State’s Marc Westgate, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. He will face fourth-seeded Sam Iftikhar of Mountain West rival New Mexico in the round of 32 on Thursday. Meanwhile, Young defeated Landon Barlow of Weber State, 7-6, 5-7, 6-3, in the first round, then produced another thrilling win, 6-2, 6-7(2), 7-6(5) over Rodolfo Juaregui of New Mexico in the second round. Young will face fifth-seeded Victor Ouvrard of Nevada on Thursday.
Fumagalli downed Dylan Hansel of Weber State, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round but fell to Andrey Goryackov of BYU, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in the second round. Senior Ali Rizvi and Parks fell to seeded players in the first round.
Three of Air Force’s four doubles teams won on Wednesday, including an 8-2 victory by Grubbs and Parks over Justin Archer of Utah and Abe Hewko of Boise State. Junior Grant Taylor and sophomore Jack McCullers defeated Hansel and Anthony Trabert of Weber State, 8-4, while Young and Fumagalli snuck past Semion Branzburg and Andrew Warren of Montana, 8-7(2).
