The Air Force men's tennis team completed the first day at two separate tournaments Friday. Eight players are playing at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic, while four others are at the Boise State Fall Classic.

Sophomore Lance Wilhelm advanced to the round of 16 of the Blue singles flight at the Boise State Fall Classic with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mike Facey of Montana in the second round. The second-seeded Wilhelm received a bye in the first round. Senior Taylor Soster and freshman Alex Grubbs each won his consolation match after losing his first match of the day.

At the UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic, freshman Lucas-Marin Salcedo advanced to the quarterfinals of the "A" singles bracket with a thrilling 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Rob Pezzutto of Northern Arizona. Senior Alex Beaussart and freshman Alex Lineberry each lost in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, in the "B" singles bracket, four Falcons advanced to the quarterfinals. Sophomores Sam Barnes and Stephen Katrein, along with freshman Steven Young, each won two matches in straight sets, while freshman Ali Rizvi received a bye in the first round, then beat Mads Hegelund of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-2, to advance. Junior Mike Tope lost in the round of 16 but won his first collegiate match defeating Joshua Lup of New Mexico Military Institute, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round.

In doubles play, Beaussart and Barnes won their first round match then lost in the round of 16, as did Rizvi and Young. Tope and Katrein also lost in the round of 16 after receiving a first-round bye. All three doubles teams will play in the consolation round on Saturday.
