Two Falcons Reach Finals at Balloon Fiesta

Junior Lance Wilhelm and sophomore Alex Grubbs each advanced to the finals of his singles flight Saturday at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. Wilhelm, seeded second at the tournament, will play New Mexico's Ben Dunbar in the "A" flight final while Grubbs will face Robin Chou of Arizona in the "B" flight title match on Sunday. Both Wilhelm and Grubbs won two matches on Saturday, one in straight sets and one in three sets. Wilhelm dispatched of UNM's James Hignett, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, then beat Mitch McDaniels of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in the semis. Meanwhile, Grubbs went the distance with Matthew Neeld of UNM, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the "B" quarters, then downed Arizona's Frank Chen, 6-1, 6-1 in the semis. In addition, sophomore Steven Young will play in the "A" flight consolation semifinals on Sunday against Shaun Waters of Northern Arizona after defeating CSU-Pueblo's Alex Lesiuk, 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday. In doubles action, Wilhelm and Taylor advanced to the semifinals after an 8-3 triumph over Evan Corona-Saunders and Ian Supple of New Mexico and will face teammates Alex Grubbs and Landon Kinsey, who disposed of UNM's McDaniels and Mads Hegelund by the same score. Sophomore Andy Jackson and Ali Rizvi will play in the consolation semifinals on Sunday after beating Eduardo Cabrita and Alex Mancayo of CSU-Pueblo. For updates throughout the tournament, click here.
