The Air Force men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Balloon Fiesta Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. on Sunday. The Falcons sent a doubles team, senior Keith Cronican and freshman James Tomlin, to the finals before falling to the second-seeded team of Stepjan Beg and Rocardo Gorostiaga of New Mexico State, 8-6.
Cronican and Tomlin won four matches en route to the finals, including a couple of exciting 9-8 matches along the way. They downed Achim Ceban and Anthony Gomez of San Diego State in the quarterfinals, then upset top-seed Alex Labrosse and Peter Zimmer of Arizona in the semifinals.
In singles play, freshman Mike Youn advanced to the quarterfinals of the top flight before falling to the top seed, Graeme Kassautzki of New Mexico, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Robby Alexander won a pair of three-set consolation matches on Saturday, defeating Kalle Rosen of Denver, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Gorostiaga, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Brett Rodgers also won a consolation match, beating Alejandro De Mucha of New Mexico State, 7-5, 6-2, and Cronican downed Chandler Brass of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-4.
In singles flight "B", four Falcons, freshmen Cody Gaby, Mike Gies and Austin Francis, and senior Ryan White, all claimed consolation wins after losing in the main draw.
Air Force is back in action next weekend as selected Falcons will travel to Midland, Texas to compete in the Racquet Club Invitational, Oct. 13-15.
