Falcons Wrap up Day One at Balloon Fiesta

    The Air Force men's tennis team went 6-6 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles Friday on the first day of the 2011 UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. Freshman Landon Kinsey won both of his singles matches and joins junior Lance Wilhelm in the quarterfinals of the flight "A" singles draw.

    Kinsey defeated Mads Hegelund of New Mexico, 6-2, 7-6, in the first round, then beat Paul Denele of New Mexico State, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 16. He will meet Arizona's Carlos Bermudez in the quarters on Saturday. Wilhelm, the tournament's No. 2-seed, easily handled Mike Pigou of Arizona, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16 and will play UNM's James Hignett in the quarters.

    Meanwhile, junior Vinni Lodolo and sophomore Alex Grubbs each won his first match in the fight "B" singles draw on Friday. Lodolo downed Tony O'Connell of New Mexico Military Institute, 6-1, 6-1, while Grubbs beat Ian Supple of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-2.

    In doubles action, three Air Force teams won in the round of 16 and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor, the top-seeded doubles team, blanked Ian Honila and Zack Romero of NMMI, 8-0, while Grubbs and Kinsey beat Bruno Hurtado and Alex Luisek of CSU-Pueblo, 8-5. Those two teams will play each other on Saturday at 9 a.m. Also reaching the quarterfinals are sophomore Steven Young and freshman Joey Brandt, who took care of NMMI's duo of O'Connell and Dave Reddy, 8-3.
