Falcons Play Well on Final Day of Milwaukee Classic
Sept. 15, 2013
The Air Force men’s tennis team wrapped up play with a very successful final day at the 38th Milwaukee Classic Sunday, hosted by the Town Club. The Falcons took one of three doubles matches against Marquette in the morning, then won four of six singles matches against Ball State in the afternoon.
"We finished the tournament strong today with four singles wins against Ball State,” said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. “This is the type of tennis we've been expecting, especially from our seniors. Overall, we come away from this tourney with a lot of positives in singles and doubles.”
The Falcons doubles team of senior Steven Young and freshman Lucas Fumagalli won for the second straight day, defeating Nick Dykema / Krystiyan Trukov of Marquette, 8-6. Junior Grant Taylor and sophomore Jack McCullers lost their match, 8-3, while senior Andy Jackson and sophomore Andrew Parks lost 8-6.
In the afternoon singles matches, Young, Fumagalli and senior Alex Grubbs each won in straight sets, while Taylor rallied to post a thrilling, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(10) victory over Ball State’s Patrick Elliott. Fumagalli, who defeated Matt Helm, 6-3, 6-3, won his first collegiate singles match, while Young finished the tournament with a team-best 4-2 overall record.
Jackson, who narrowly lost a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) decision in singles to Ray Leonard on Sunday, won the men's Sportsmanship Award at the tournament. The award is selected by tournament officials and given to the athlete who demonstrates meaningful and significant sportsmanship to serve as a role model not only for the tournament, but also the sport of tennis.
The Falcons are idle until competing at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic beginning on Friday, Oct. 4 in Albuquerque, N.M.
