The Air Force men's tennis team wrapped up its 2009-10 campaign Wednesday with a 4-0 loss to 55th-ranked San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. The Falcons finished the season with a 10-13 record.
The second-seeded Aztecs, who evened their record at 12-12, took a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Tim Schultz van Endert and Andre Feliz won at No. 3, 8-1, over junior Alex Beaussart and freshman Sam Barnes, then Giovanni Vaglietti and Achim Vladimirschi won the No. 1 doubles match, 8-2, over senior Brett Rodgers and junior Taylor Soster. The No. 2 match was then halted with SDSU's duo of Luis Rattenhuber and Juan Gomez leading senior Austin Francis and freshman Lance Wilhelm 4-3.
Vladimirschi earned the second point for SDSU at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Francis and Feliz made it 3-0 at No. 6 singles by rallying from a set down to defeat 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over freshman Stephen Katrein.
Shultz van Endert clinched the match for the Aztecs with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot over Barnes. The other three matches were then halted. Soster was leading Rattenhuber, 3-6, 6-2, 5-2 at No. 4, while Wilhelm won the first set, 6-4, over Gomez at No. 1 but was trailing 3-2 in the second. Meanwhile, Vaglietti was winning the No. 3 match over Rodgers, 6-2, 3-6, 3-0.
"Despite losing 4-0, this was one of our best matches of the year," said first-year head coach Dan Oosterhous. "There were 30-plus mile per hour winds and I thought our guys handled the conditions very well. It was an exciting match and I'm extremely proud of the season we had."
