Falcons Drop Season Finale, 7-0, to New Mexico

The Air Force men's tennis team wrapped up its 2011 regular season Saturday with a 7-0 loss to New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. With the win, the Lobos improved to 14-9 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Falcons fell to 10-13 and 0-6 in league play. The host team claimed the doubles point with wins at all three spots, beginning with an 8-1 victory by Ben Dunbar and Conor Berg over Taylor Soster and Andy Jackson at the No. 2 position. Clinching the doubles point for UNM was Carl Ho and Joe Wood at No. 3, defeating Alex Grubbs and Ali Rizvi, 8-0. Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win against Lance Wilhelm and Steven Young at No. 1. In singles play, New Mexico won four of the six matches in straight sets, with the two three-setters coming at the No. 1 and 4 spots. Wilhelm lost to Phillips, 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 at the top spot, suffering his fourth loss in three sets against MWC No. 1 opponents this season. Ho downed Grubbs, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 4 in the other three-setter. The Falcons enter next week's Mountain West Conference Championships as the seventh seed and will face No. 2 seed TCU on Wednesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in Fort Collins, Colo.
