Falcons Edged by USF, 4-3, in Regular Season Finale

The Air Force men’s tennis team wrapped up its 2013-14 regular season Sunday with a hard fought 4-3 loss to the University of San Francisco in Boise, Idaho. The Dons improved to 14-13 this season while the Falcons fell to 13-11.
Air Force’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Alex Grubbs and sophomore Jack McCullers were off the court first with an 8-3 victory over James Tallman and Timothy Tan. However, USF won the other two matches as Germain Bahri and Thomas Takemoto downed junior Grant Taylor and freshman Lucas Fumagalli, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot and Nils Skajaa and Bernardo Saraiva beat seniors Andy Jackson and Steven Young, 8-4, at No. 1 to claim the doubles point.
Skajaa gave USF a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jackson at the top spot, but Fumagalli and Grubbs evened the match for Air Force with a straight set win at No. 5 and 4, respectively. Tallman put he Dons back ahead 3-2 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over McCullers at No. 2, but Young made it 3-all with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Takemoto at the No. 3 position. Tan clinched the match for USF with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over sophomore Andrew Parks at No. 6.
The Falcons will travel to Fresno, Calif., next week for the 2014 Mountain West Championships, which begin Thursday, April 24. The tournament’s brackets will be released on Monday, April 21.
