Falcons Edged by Fresno State, 4-3

The Air Force men’s tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Fresno State Friday afternoon at the Academy. The Falcons, who lost the doubles point then split the six singles contests, fell to 10-8 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain West, while Fresno State improved to 7-13 and 2-1.
Fresno State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spots. The Falcons’ No. 1 team of senior Lance Wilhelm and sophomore Grant Taylor improved to 13-5 this spring with an 8-4 victory over Reid deLaubenfels and Sam McNeil. The Bulldogs won the No. 2 match, 8-5, and the No. 3 match 8-6, to clinch the doubles point.
DeLaubenfels put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 by defeating Air Force junior Steven Young, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot, but the Falcons won the next three matches to take a 3-2 lead. Taylor defeated Nikolas Papic, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 4, junior Alex Grubbs rallied to beat Sai Kartik, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 and freshman Jack McCullers downed Jeremy Quiroz, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6.
McNeil evened the match at 3-all with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over freshman Andrew Parks at No. 5, setting up the No. 1 contest to decide the team match. Wilhelm, ranked 75th in the country, rallied from losing the first set to Felipe Fritz, 7-5, to win the second, 6-4, but lost the third 6-4.
Air Force hosts is back in action on Sunday, April 7 by hosting UNLV at 11 a.m.
