BYU Downs Air Force, 7-0

The BYU men's tennis team recorded its first Mountain West Conference win on Saturday when it handed Air Force a 7-0 loss in Las Vegas. With the win the Cougars improve to 13-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Falcons fell to 10-11 and 0-3 in MWC action. The Cougars won the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, Cassidy Mears and Evan Urbina recorded the first win for the Cougars with an 8-2 victory over sophomore Mike Gies and freshman Johnny Buckingham. Daniel Hwang and Thomas Shubert were the next to follow, closing out their match at No. 2, 8-3, over Sophomore Austin Francis and freshman Alex Beaussart to claim the point. On the first court, Jonathan Sanchez and A.J. Young defeated sophomore Brett Rodgers and freshman Taylor Soster, 8-3, to complete the doubles sweep. In singles play, Evan Urbina won the No. 5 match over Beaussart, 6-1, 6-1. BYU's five remaining players also won their respective matches in straight sets. At No. 2, Shubert defeated Francis, 6-3, 6-2, while Young recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gies at the No. 6 spot to clinch the team match. Mears beat Soster, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Sanchez won 6-3, 6-4, over Rodgers at the top spot. Hwang wrapped things up for the Cougars with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Beaussart at No. 5. The Falcons continue MWC play next weekend with three matches in Albuquerque, N.M., beginning with a match against San Diego State on Friday, April 4. BYU 7, Air Force 0 Singles
