The Air Force men's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Weber State at the Academy. With the win, the Falcons improved to 8-2 this spring.
The Falcons fell behind 1-0 when Weber State won the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches. Freshmen Alex Grubbs and Ali Rizvi captured the only Air Force win at No. 3 with an 8-6 win over Peter Ramstromer-Pello and Caio Poitena.
In singles, freshman Lucas Marin-Salcedo evened the match at 1-all with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Landon Barlow at No. 2, then Grubbs put the Falcons up for good with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ramstromer-Pello at No. 4. Sophomore Lance Wilhelm rebounded from his first loss of the spring on Friday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Simon Unger for a 3-1 Falcon lead and freshman Andy Jackson clinched the match for AFA with an exciting 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) win over Poitena at No. 3.
"It's great to see our team battle back after losing the doubles point again," said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. "We're a very young team and we'll continue to improve in doubles but our singles performance remains the bright spot for our team. Andy Jackson came up big to clinch the match for us -down 5-3 in the third set, he battled back, saving match points, to win in the 3rd set tie-breaker."
The Falcons open Mountain West Conference action on Thursday, March 10 against UNLV at the Academy. The match is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
