Feb. 22, 2009
The Air Force men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Weber State Wildcats Sunday at the Academy. With the victory, Weber State improved to 4-4 this season, while the Falcons fell to 1-8. Despite an exciting, come-from-behind 9-7 victory by junior Brett Rodgers and sophomore Taylor Soster at No. 2 doubles, the Wildcats won the doubles point with wins at the other two spots. In singles play, WSU's Henning Hipp gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rodgers at the No. 3 position, but the Falcons battled back with the next two wins. Soster downed Spencer Marchant, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4, then freshman Cody Hall rallied from losing the first set in a tiebreaker (7-4), to win the next two sets, 6-0, 7-5 against Simon Unger at No. 2. With the team score tied at 2-all, the match of the day finished up at the No. 1 position between Air Force's Austin Francis and WSU's Sascha Kiehne. Francis won the first set, 6-2, while Kiehne took the second, 6-3, then outlasted Francis 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Travis Covington clinched the match for WSU with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over sophomore Alex Beaussart at the No. 6 spot. The Falcons are back in action next Friday, Feb. 27 against the University of Oregon at the Academy, beginning at 10 a.m.
