Falcons Drop Tough 5-2 Decision to Utah
Feb. 1, 2013
The Air Force men's tennis team won the doubles point but lost five of the six singles Friday and dropped a 5-2 decision to the University of Utah at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City. The Utes improved to 4-0 while the Falcons fell to 3-2 this season.
The Falcons jumped out to an 1-0 lead with victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles spots. AFA's No. 3 team of juniors Alex Grubbs and Ali Rizvi handled Dmytro Mamedov and Rafael Dividian, 8-3, while the No. 1 team of senior Lance Wilhelm and sophomore Grant Taylor downed Ben Tasevac and Cedric Williams, 8-5. Juniors Steven Young and Andy Jackson fell just short at the No. 2 spot, losing 9-7 to Devin Lane and Alejandro Medinilla.
The first three singles matches off the court were all straight-set contests. Tasevac evened the match at 1-all and handed Jackson his first loss of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot. Wilhelm stayed perfect (5-0) for Air Force at the No. 1 position with a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Mountain Region's fifth-ranked player Mamedov, but the Utes' Williams evened the match again by defeating Taylor, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Then things got very interesting as the final three matches all went to a third set, with Utah winning all three. Utah took a 3-2 lead when Davidian beat Rizvi, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot and Lane clinched the match for the Utes with a come from behind 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Grubbs at No. 4. Medinillas finished the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory over Young at No. 3.
"This was such a hard fought match and a tough one to lose," said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. "Our team came out sharp in doubles and we pushed the match as far as we could, coming up just short. I could not be prouder of how we played and worked as a team."
The Falcons play at BYU on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m.
