Falcon Menís Swimming Takes 4th Place After At 2004 UCI/Speedo Cup

    LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Air Force men's swimming team took fourth place at the 2004 UCI/Speedo Cup with 796.5 points. Stanford won the 13-team field with 1,595 points.
    The Falcons' top event was the 1650 yard freestyle, where the Falcons took three of the top 12 spots. Leading the way was sophomore Chris Knaute, who swam the second-fastest 1650 free time in Academy history with a swim of 15:21.40 which was seven seconds faster than his previous best. Senior Ryan Fitzgerald followed with a 11th place finish with a time of 16:19.46 and junior Matt Karmondy placed 12th with a time of 16:21.93.
    In the 200 back, Justin Lapin finished fifth with a swim of 1:49.99 which is the fourth-fastest mark in Academy history. Senior Evan Parr followed with a seventh place finish with a swim of 1:50.60, the sixth-fastest mark in school history. Junior Kimo Yamashiro also placed 16th (1:58.14/1:57.20).
    Sophomore Ryan Moss was the top Falcon finisher in the 100 free with a 12th-place finish (46.98). Junior Gordon White was 14th (47.29) and freshman T.J. Cowling was 16th (47.79/47.46).
    Sophomore Andrew Bergman was the lone Falcon participant in the 200 breaststroke, taking 13th with a swim of 2:07.38.
    In the 200 butterfly sophomore Paul Parmenter took fifth with a time of 1:53.32. He was followed by class mate Matt Sievers who finished seventh (1:53.92/1:53.89) and Yamashiro who was 13th (1:59.40).
    The Falcon men's team will now take the next month and a half off from competition. Air Force returns to action, Jan. 5, in a three-way meet against Florida Atlantic and Purdue in Boca Raton, Fla.
