Oct. 15, 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Former Air Force swimmer Chris Knaute was one of 10 athletes named to the Mountain West Conference Men's Swimming and Diving 10th Anniversary Team, as announced by the conference this evening. The team was selected by a combined panel of media, institutional and conference personnel and online fan poll. In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates must have been a top finisher at the MWC or NCAA championships.
Knaute, a 2007 Air Force graduate, is one of the most decorated swimmers in MWC history. A two-time conference swimmer of the year, Knaute captured nine MWC titles during his tenure at the Academy. He dominated in the 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM, recording top-three conference finishes in each season he competed. Over four years, Knaute won three titles in each of the three events, while adding second-place finishes in the 500 free (2004) and 1650 free (2007) and a third-place showing in the 400 IM in 2004.
Knaute, who earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 500 free and 400 IM in 2006, owns four school records (200 free, 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM). In addition, he also holds the Mountain West Conference records in the 500 free and 400 IM.
After training with the Mecklenburg (N.C.) Aquatic Club for a year as a member of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), Knaute is now in pilot training in Del Rio, Texas.
Anniversary teams will be chosen for each of the 19 conference-sponsored sports during the 2008-09 seasons in celebration of the Mountain West's 10th anniversary.
