Sept. 19, 2008
USAFA, Colo. - Highlighted by an annual trip to the prestigious Nike Cup, a dual meet at service academy rival Army and an always challenging conference slate, the 2008-09 Air Force men's swimming and diving schedule was released today. The 2008-09 men's swimming and diving season for the Falcons begins Oct. 17-18, when they head to Fort Colins, Colo., for the Early Bird Invitational, hosted by Colorado State. A week later, Air Force competes in a quad meet at Denver, along with Colorado School of Mines and Metro State. On Oct. 31, the Falcons head to West Point, N.Y., to take on rival Army in dual action. Another standout event on the Air Force schedule comes Nov. 7-8, when the Falcons head to the UCI/Lincoln Aquatics Shootout, hosted by UC Irvine. There, Air Force will take on some of the top teams in the West, before opening its Mountain West Conference slate on Nov. 13 with a home meet versus TCU. The Falcons then face off against some of the best talent in the nation, as the swimmers head to the annual Nike Cup in Long Beach, Calif., Nov. 20-22, while the divers take part in the Arizona Diving Invitational, Nov. 21-23. As part of their winter training, the divers will head back to Tucson, Ariz., while the swimmers will take part in the UC San Diego Relay Meet. The Falcons then return home to host UNLV on Jan. 16, followed by a meet with Denver on Jan. 17. Air Force's final dual meets on the road come on Jan. 23 and 24, when it visits BYU and Utah, respectively. The Falcons host their annual Air Force Academy Diving Invitational Jan. 30-31, before the team wraps up its conference schedule by hosting Wyoming on Feb. 7. The MWC Championships, scheduled for Feb. 25-28, are once again being held in Oklahoma City, Okla. Shortly thereafter, the men will head to the American Short Course Championships in Austin, Texas, March 5-7. The NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals are slated for March 12-14 in Austin, Texas, while the NCAA Championships will be in Columbus, Ohio, March 26-28.
While losing just three seniors from last year's campaign, Air Force returns six all-conference performers from the 2007-08 season. Included amongst the top returners are MWC platform diving champion Kyle Van Valkenburg and U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers Bryan Avery, Justin Day and Benjamin Gunn. |
