Nineteen Air Force Swimmers/Divers Earn Academic All-MWC Honors

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Nineteen members of the Air Force men's and women's swimming and diving teams were named Academic All-Mountain West Conference selections, as announced by the league Tuesday afternoon. The men's squad placed nine individuals on the academic all-conference team, while 10 members of the women's team received academic All-MWC accolades. The 19 combined academic all-conference selections are the most for the Air Force swimming and diving teams since 2006. On the men's side, senior Spencer Butt (Sterling, Va.) led the way with his third selection to the academic all-conference team. Junior Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomores Nathaniel Gilbert (River Falls, Wis.), Tom Hansen (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), Karl Mohrmann (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Eric Robinson (Lakewood, Colo.) each earn academic All-MWC honors for the second time, while freshmen Johnathan Cox (Kingwood, Texas), Cody Deacon (Portland, Ore.) and Nathan Erickson (Moraga, Calif.) were all named to the team for the first time. For the women, senior captain Jane Hwang (Irvine, Calif.) and classmate Robbie Nitzberg (Springfield, Va.) earned academic all-conference honors for the fourth-straight year to lead the Falcons. Katelyn Hunter (Jr., La Crescent, Minn.), Kaeli Kluesner (So., Denver, Colo.) and Chelsea Tompkins (Jr., Grand Junction, Colo.) each receive the second academic All-MWC accolades of their careers, while freshmen Alison Ceranski (Marinette, Wis.), Elvira Chiccarelli (Panama City Beach, Fla.), Lauren Delaney (Panama City, Fla.), Jenna Dolata (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Rachel Reeder (St. Thomas, Pa.) all earn academic all-conference recognition for the first time.
A record-breaking total of 772 student-athletes from all nine member institutions were named to the spring 2009 Academic All-Mountain West Conference team. Spring sports include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
