THIS WEEK: The Air Force men’s swimming and diving team hosts a dual meet against the University of Denver, Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Schlessman Natatorium on the campus of Colorado College, in Colorado Springs. The dual was originally scheduled for the Cadet Natatorium, but was moved to Colorado College due to repairs at the Academy’s pool.
FOR THE RECORD – MEN: The men’s team is 9-3 overall this season after posting dual wins over Incarnate Word and conference rival Seattle, Jan. 12-13. The dual meet against UNLV, Jan. 20, was postponed due to the government shutout.
TOP MEN: Several Falcons are among the fastest in the WAC, led by junior Steffen Mount. Mount ranks second in the 50 free (19.96), second in the 100 free (43.23), third in the 200 free (1:37.66) and second in the 100 fly (47.71). Senior Garrett Glaudini ranks fourth in the 500 free (4:28.53), third in the 1000 free (9:35.19) and third in the 1650 free (15:31.10). Junior Collin Green is second in the 1650 free (15:27.28), fourth in the 1000 free (9:35.19) and sixth in the 500 free (4:30.50).
In the backstroke, senior Joey Gebhart is fourth in the 200 (1:48.29) and fifth in the 100 (48.90). Sophomore Cole McAnany is third in the 100 (48.40) and sixth in the 200 (1:48.89). In the breaststroke, sophomore Zach Nelson is third in the 200 (1:59.95). Sophomore Andrew Weiss is sixth in the 100 (55.40) while senior Derek Brecht is sixth in the 200 (2:00.86). Freshman Peter Lochmaier is fifth in the 200 fly (1:48.55).
Several Falcons rank in the top five in the IM events. In the 200, Nelson ranks third (1:49.82). In the 400, Glaudini is second (3:55.19), Kyle Bundesmann is third (3:55.87) and Green is fourth (3:55.99).
In the relay events, the 400 free, 800 free and 200 medley teams all rank second in the WAC while the 200 free team ranks third and the 400 medley team is fifth.
In diving, senior Nick Piontek ranks third in 1-meter (285.83) and fourth in 3-meter (294.75). Freshman Cole Armagost ranks fifth in both 1-meter (277.73) and 3-meter (293.25).
THE SENIORS: The Air Force senior class of swimmers Derek Brecht, Joey Gebhart, Garrett Glaudini, Michael Hannigan and Lars Knutson and divers Erich Drollinger and Nick Piontek. The class helped lead the Falcons to the 2016 and 2017 Western Athletic Conference Championships. Several members of the class rank among the best in school history. Hannigan ranks fourth in the 50 free, second in the100 free and fourth in the 200 free. Gebhart is third in the 100 back and seventh in the 200 back. Brecht is ninth in the 100 breast, sixth in the 200 breast, 10th in the 200 IM and ninth in the 400 IM. Knutson ranks ninth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free. Glaudini stands sixth in the 500 free, eighth in the 1000 free, seventh in the 1650 free, third in the 400 IM.
DIVING INVITATIONAL CANCELLED: The annual Air Force Diving Invitational, scheduled for Feb. 2-3, has been cancelled due to the repairs at the Cadet Natatorium.
ON THE HORIZON: Following the dual, the men’s team will be idle until the Western Athletic Conference Championships, Feb. 21-24, in Houston, Texas. Air Force has won the WAC Championship each of the last two seasons.
