Air Force Men's Swimming Finishes Second At Arena Invitational

    LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Air Force men's swim team finished in second place behind Stanford at the Arena Invitational hosted by UC San Diego Saturday at the Belmont Pool Plaza. Senior Benjamin Gunn set a new school record in the 200 yard butterfly to lead the Falcons. Five Falcons cracked the school's all-time top-10 marks.

    Air Force's strongest event was the 200 fly, where Gunn took third and freshman Paul Leonhardt followed in fifth. Gunn set a new school record with a time of 1:45.57. It beat his own school record of 1:46.40 and was the fastest conference mark this season by over five seconds. It was also the third fastest 200 fly time in Mountain West Conference history. Leonhardt swam a time of 1:49.58, which is ninth all-time at the Academy.

    Air Force also got a big swim out of sophomore Ryan Brigman, who took second in the 1650 freestyle. Brigman swam a time of 15:49.80, shaving 36 seconds off his previous career best.

    The Falcons swam well in the 200 backstroke and 200 breastroke with three top 10 finishes in the 200 back and two in the 200 breast.

    Air Force went sixth, seventh and eighth in the 200 back. Sophomore Matt Millikin took sixth with a time of 1:48.76 in the prelims, which is the eighth fastest time at AFA. Sophmore Paul Young took seventh with a season-best time of 1:49.21. Senior Thomas Hansen was eighth with a season-best time of 1:49.06 in the prelims.

    In the 200 breast, junior Cody Deacon placed fifth and senior Josh Hammervold took eighth. Deacon swam a finals time of 2:03.52 for the eighth-fastest time in school history. Hammervold swam a prelims time of 2:02.84 for his season best.

    In the 100 free, freshman Micah Newmann led the way with a 10th place finish and junior Cole Smith followed in 13th. Newmann swam a time of 45.26 for the ninth-fastest time in school history. Smith notched a time 45.58 which was two seconds faster than his previous career best.

    The Falcons finished the meet by taking fourth in the 400 free relay. Gunn, Newmann, Smith and Leonhardt swam a time of 3:00.67 which was over four seconds faster than the previous season best.
