Air Force Men's Swimming Has Strong Start At Arena Invitational

    LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Air Force men's swim team sits in second place after day one action at the Arena Invitational hosted by UC San Diego Thursday at the Belmont Pool Plaza. A pair of Falcons cracked the school's Top 10 list in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle events.

    Air Force's best event on the day was the 200 IM, where three Falcons cracked the top eight. Senior Benjamin Gunn took third with a finals time of 1:47.73, which was half a second off his school record time of 1:47.22. Freshman Paul Leonhart placed seventh. Leonhardt's prelim time of 1:49.78 is the seventh-fastest time in school history. Senior Eric Robinson took eighth with a prelim time of 1:51.37.

    Junior Corydon Butler placed seventh in the 500 free with a finals time of 4:25.90, which is the fourth-fastest time in school history.

    Senior Robert Dawson was Air Force's top swimmer in the 50 free, clocking a prelim and season-best time of 20.70.

    The Falcons also swam well in the relay events, placing fourth in the 400 medley relay and fifth in the 200 free relay.

    In the 400 medley relay, Gunn, Cody Deacon, Leonhardt and Dawson clocked a time of 3:18.34 which was over 13 seconds faster than the previous season high. In the 200 free relay, Gunn, Newmann, Cole Smith and Dawson combined for a time of 1:22.35 which was over three seconds faster than the previous season best.

    Tomorrow's schedule includes the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 800 free relay. Preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. (PT) with the finals slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
