Air Force Wraps Up Competition at Nike Cup

Long Beach, Calif. - After three days of action, the Air Force men's and women's swimming teams have completed competition at the UCI/Nike Cup, held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif. The men, with 847 points, finshed in third place behind third-ranked Stanford and BYU, while the women took 11th place with 223.5 points.
For the men, Sean O'Keefe (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) took second place in the 1650 free, clocking in at 15:43.19, while teammate Tom Hansen (Fr., Berkeley Heights, N.J.) finished fifth in the event with a mark of 15:54.47. In the 200 back, Kai Yamashiro (Jr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) placed sixth with a mark of 1:50.03, while Benjamin Gunn (Fr., Gainesville, Ga.) turned in a time of 1:49.12 in the finals before finishing ninth. Juniors Bryan Avery (Mililani, Hawaii) and Nick Dixon (Canton, Mich.) turned in top-10 finishes for Air Force in the 200 butterfly, with Avery placing seventh with a preliminary time of 1:51.61, while Dixon took 10th with a mark of 1:52.80 in the finals.
T.J. Cowling (Sr., Newport News, Va.) was Air Force's top finisher in the 100 free, finishing 13th after swimming a 46.05 in the prelims, while freshman Josh Hammervold (Sugar Land, Texas) led the Falcons in the 200 breaststroke, with a mark of 2:06.15 in the preliminaries. In addition, the men's 400 freestyle relay team of Gunn, Avery, O'Keefe and Cowling took third place, clocking in at 3:05.16.
On the women's side, junior Jane Hwang (Irvine, Calif.) posted a top-10 finish in the 100 free, taking seventh after turning in a time of 52.28 in the prelims. Freshman Betsy Scarberry was the top finisher in the 1650 free, placing 20th with a time of 18:01.64, while Kaeli Kluesner (Fr., Denver, Colo.) took 18th in the 200 back, clocking in at 2:08.00.
In the 400 free relay, the team of Jessica Rodgers, Hwang, Esther Kim (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Kelly Grabarek (Fr., Laguna Niguel, Calif.) turned in a time of 3:38.98 to finish 12th.
The Air Force women return to action Dec. 7 with a dual meet versus Northern Colorado, while the men are off until Jan. 4, when they compete in the UC San Diego Relays.
