U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force men’s swimming and diving team opened competition at the Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, Texas on Thursday, Nov. 16. The three-day meet consists of a prelim and final format. In events 200 yards or shorter, the top 32 athletes return to swim again in finals and in events 400 yards or greater, the fastest 24 athletes return. The invitational draws several notable swimming programs on the men’s side to include Texas A&M, Utah, LSU and Hawaii. With 94 points, Air Force is in fifth place. Texas A&M leads the field with 425 points, followed by Utah (310), LSU (199) and Hawaii (109).
Thursday’s lineup consisted of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and in finals only, the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay. Air Force opened finals strong with all three relays contributing to the team’s overall score. In the 200 free relay, the Falcons placed fourth as the “A” relay made up of Steffen Mount, Lars Knutson, Cole McAnany, and Michael Hannigan with a time of 1:20.52. The Air Force “B” relay was 12th with Daniel Keith, Joey Gebhart, Jack Ayres, and Erik Orr (1:23.50). Placing 16th overall was the Air Force “C” relay team comprised of Andrew Weiss, Ben Settle, Riley Delahoyde, and Ryan Klein (1:26.48).
In the 500 freestyle, senior Garret Glaudini improved upon his seeded time to place sixth overall in the event (4:28.53) and junior Collin Green was 12th (4:30.50). The three Falcons who returned to swim in the “C” final of the 500 freestyle were freshman Peter Lochmaier (4:33.24), freshman Vinny Vivadelli (4:33.39), and sophomore Delahoyde (4:40.39).
The top finisher for Air Force in the 200 IM was sophomore Zach Nelson in 1:49.82 (18th), followed by sophomore Kyle Bundesmann in 1:50.87 (22nd), and Senior Dereck Brecht in 1:51.09 (23rd).
Earning an NCAA B cut in the 50 freestyle, Mount placed fourth with a time of 20.06. Mount’s evening swim was a mere one tenth off his prelim time, and his second NCAA “B” cut of the day, with a time of 19.96. McAnany was 12th in 20.73, Ayers was 19th in 20.66, Hannigan was 21st in 20.83, Knutson was 22nd in 20.95, and Gebhart was 27th in 20.75.
Closing the night with the 400 medley relay, the Air Force Academy “B” relay, swam by Gebhart (back), Brecht (breast), Lochmaier (fly), and Knutson (free), earned an 11th place finish.
The invitational continues on Friday, Nov. 17for the second day of competition. Prelims start at 9:30 CST and the events are 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke. Finals start at 6:00 pm and will include the 200 medley relay, 3 meter diving, and the 800 free relay.
