Falcons Wrap Up Opening Day at Trojan Diving Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Led by senior Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.), the Air Force men's and women's diving teams completed the first day of competition at the Trojan Diving Invitational, hosted by USC. Friday's events included the men's 1-meter dive, the women's 3-meter dive and both the men's and women's platform events.
Van Valkenburg was the Falcons' top performer in both men's events, placing fifth on the platform, while just missing out on the finals of the 1-meter competition, finishing ninth overall. The two-time defending Mountain West champion on the platform, Van Valkenburg scored a 280.05 in the event. Meanwhile, he notched a score of 262.75 on the 1-meter board, less than seven points away from advancing to the finals.
Also competing for the Air Force men were David Arlington (Sr., Eagle River, Alaska), Cheyne Clark (So., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Beau Riebe (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash.). Arlington registered an 11th place finish on the 1-meter board with a score of 241.00, while coming in ninth on the platform with a mark of 227.75. Clark placed seventh on the platform with a score of 235.60, while scoring 196.95 to take 16th-place on the 1-meter board. Meanwhile, Riebe finished 10th on the platform and 13th at 1-meter and with scores of 198.65 and 219.60, respectively.
Senior Chelsea Tompkins (Grand Junction, Colo.) was the lone Air Force diver on the women's side, finishing fifth on the platform and 14th on the 3-meter board. An all-conference performer on the platform last season, Tompkins scored a 179.75 in the event, while finishing with a mark of 192.20 at 3-meters.
The invitational concludes tomorrow, with the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter springboard events. The preliminaries are slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. (PT), with finals scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m.
