Air Force Men Earn a Split in First Dual Action of the Season

    DENVER, Colo. - With three first-place finishes and five second-place showings, the Air Force men's swimming and diving team went 1-1 in their first dual meets of the season on Saturday, falling to host Denver, 138-102, while defeating Colorado School of Mines, 204-39.

    The top finishers for Air Force were senior Justin Day (Peyton, Colo.) and sophomore Robert Dawson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who each won an event. Day took first place in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 58.05, while Dawson was the top performer in the 50 freestyle, winning the race with a time of 21.32.

    Also in the 100 breast, sophomore Josh Hammervold (Sugar Land, Texas) finished third with a mark of 59.53. In addition, Cody Deacon (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Greg Edmonds (Jr., Fairfax Station, Va.), who was exhibitioning the event, tied for the fourth-fastest mark with a time of 1:00.58. Meanwhile, Jared Jaime (So., Anchorage, Alaska) added a fourth-place showing in the 50 free, coming in with a time of 22.25.

    Sophomore Benjamin Gunn (Gainesville, Ga.) recorded his top finish in the 200 IM, placing second with a mark of 1:56.60. Hammervold finished fourth in the event (1:59.69), while freshman Kaleb Jenkins (Savannah, Ga.) took fifth place (2:00.70). The Falcons were led in the 100 butterfly by junior Chris Morin (Crown Point, Ind.), who took second after touching in a time of 51.57. Gunn was third with a mark of 52.12, followed by Karl Mohrmann (So., Lake Forest, Ill.) in fourth place at 52.96.

     

     

    Three of the top four placewinners in the 200 free came from Air Force, with sophomore Eric Robinson (Lakewood, Colo.) leading the way, notching a time of 1:44.33 to finish second. Robinson was followed by senior Bryan Avery (Mililani, Hawaii) and freshman Corydon Butler (Williamsburg, Va.) who clocked in at 1:44.76 and 1:44.90, respectively.

    In the 100 backstroke, senior Kai Yamashiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii) was the runner-up, registering a time of 52.00, while Gunn finished fourth in the event at 53.79. Meanwhile, in the 100 free, Avery was Air Force's top finisher, placing third with a mark of 47.93, followed by Johnathan Cox (Fr., Kingwood, Texas) in fifth place at 49.44.

    Air Force also had three of the top-five times in the 500 free, with Robinson taking third place in a mark of 4:50.17, followed by Tom Hansen (So., Berkeley Heights, N.J.) in fourth place (4:51.16) and Butler in fifth place (4:51.50). In addition, the Falcons took third and fourth in the 1000 freestyle, as Hansen registered a mark of 10:02.62 to finish third, while Sean O'Keefe (Jr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) clocked in one second later to finish fourth.

    Air Force also took first place in the 200 freestyle relay, as Avery, Morin, Yamashiro and Dawson combined for a mark of 1:25.22. Meanwhile, the Falcons recorded the second-fastest time in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Yamashiro, Day, Morin and Dawson clocking in at 1:33.19.

    Leading the divers was junior Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.), who finished third in both springboard events. Van Valkenburg registered a score of 257.25 at 1-meter, while turning in a mark of 273.40 in the 3-meter dive. In addition, classmate David Arlington (Eagle River, Alaska) placed fourth in both events, with scores of 253.00 and 248.85, respectively.

    The Falcons are back in action next week, Oct. 31, when they head to West Point, N.Y., to take on service academy rival Army.
