Air Force Men's Swimming & Diving Sweeps Intermountain Shootout

    GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Air Force men's swimming & diving team opened the 2010-11 season with a strong performance, sweeping the Mesa State College Intermountain Shootout Swim/Dive Meet at the El Pomar Natatorium. The Falcons defeated conference rival Utah 223-148, in addition to wins over Mesa State (284-87) and Adams State (300-27).

    Senior Benjamin Gunn led Air Force by taking four events, winning the 50 yard butterfly, 200 fly, 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke. Junior Cody Deacon also won three events, sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

    In day one action Friday, the Falcons took first overall in all six individual events and placed first in 6-of-10 swim events the second day.

    The Falcons opened the meet Friday by sweeping the 200 free. Sophomore Jake Stronko won the 200 free with a time of 1:43.18. He was followed by Gunn (1:44.19) and junior Corydon Butler (1:44.20).

    Air Force then took the first two spots in the 400 IM, with senior Tom Hansen taking first with a prelim and finals times of 4:10.88/4:13.73 and senior Eric Robinson following with a finals time of 4:15.75. Senior Robert Dawson then won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.44 and junior Cole Smith took third with a time of 21.55. Deacon then won the 100 breast with a time of 57.46.

    The Falcons went first, third and fourth in the 50 fly. Gunn won the event with a time of 22.71. Junior Nate Roesler took third (23.89/24.02) and sophomore Matt Millikin placed fourth (24.03). The Falcons capped off the day by taking the first two spots in the 1650 free. Butler placed first with times of 16:10.55/16:28.46 and sophomore Ryan Brigman followed with times of 16:30.95/16:57.33.

     

     

    In Saturday's action, the Falcons started the day by taking three of the four top spots in the 200 fly. Gunn placed first with a time of 1:54.49, Robinson took third with a 1:56.10 and freshman Paul Leonhardt took fourth with times of 1:55.74/1:57.68.

    The Falcons then swept the 500 free, with Butler taking first (4:43.15), sophomore Jon Jones second (4:49.27) and Hansen third (4:50.31). The Falcons then went first and third in the 50 breast, with Deacon taking first (26.49) and senior Josh Hammervold placing third (27.43/27.52).

    Air Force followed by sweeping the 200 IM and 200 back. Gunn led the way with a 1:54.69 to win the 200 IM, followed by Robinson (1:57.65) and Leonhardt (1:57.37/1:59.78). Gunn also won the 200 back with a time of 1:53.74 and was followed by Hansen (1:56.83) and freshman Angus MacDonald (1:57.77/1:58.17).

    The Falcons capped the meet by winning the 800 free relay. The group of Leonhardt, Hansen, sophomore Tim Martinelli and freshman Micah Newmann clocked a time of 7:01.99.

    Freshman Peter Cialkowski was Air Force's top finisher in the diving events, placing fifth in the 1-meter springboard with 393.55 points. Senior Nathaniel Gilbert was the Falcons' top performer in the 3-meter springboard, placing sixth with 385.15 points.

    The Falcons return to action next weekend, Oct. 16, at the Denver Relays at the University of Denver.
