Competition Ends at NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals

AUSTIN, Texas - Air Force senior Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.) registered his best-ever regional finish, as competition ended Saturday at the 2010 NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals, being held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center on the campus of the University of Texas.
Van Valkenburg placed fifth on the men's platform to conclude a strong three-day meet, after placing 13th at 3-meters and 16th on the 1-meter board. Van Valkenburg posted a score of 337.50 in the opening round of the platform competition before finishing with a mark of 694.75. His fifth-place showing in the event was two spots higher than his finish in 2009 and the best of any Mountain West Conference diver this year.
Arizona State yielded champions on both the men's and women's platform, with Riley McCormick capturing first place in the men's event, while Elina Eggers won the women's event.
McCormick dominated on the men's platform, posting a score of 905.40. Placing second was Blaha Constantin, also of Arizona State, with a score of 737.75, while USC's Steven Starks placed third at 733.05.
Eggers, this year's zone runner-up on the 3-meter board, won the women's platform with a score of 612.30. Stanford's Margaret Hostage placed second with a score of 545.25, while USC's Victoria Ishimatsu, the zone champion in both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events this year, finished third with a mark of 525.00.
At the conclusion of the meet, the NCAA qualifiers from Zone E were named. Earning spots for the men were McCormick, Constantin and Starks, along with Brandon Watson (BYU), Harrison Jones (USC), Ben Grado (Arizona) and Brent Eichenseer (Stanford). On the women's side, Eggers, Hostage and Ishimatsu were all named qualifiers, along with Ariel Rittenhouse (USC), Stephanie Ortiz (Wyoming) and Tawni Jones (BYU).
