Falcons Take First At UCSD Relays

    La Jolla, Calif. - Winning six of seven events, the Air Force men's swimming team defeated host UC San Diego at the UCSD Relays Friday afternoon. The Falcons, who exhibitioned teams in all but one event, handed the Tritons a 76-37 loss.

    Taking first place in the 200 medley relay was the team of Kai Yamashiro (Jr., Kaneohe, Hawaii), Josh Hammervold (Fr., Sugar Land, Texas), Benjamin Gunn (Fr., Gainesville, Ga.) and Robert Dawson (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), clocking in at 1:36.40. The Falcons followed that up with a first-place finish in the 900 free relay, with sophomore Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and freshmen Eric Robinson (Lakewood, Colo.) and Tom Hansen (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) combining for a time of 8:29.30.

    In the 300 medley relay, Spencer Liedl (Sr., Neenah, Wis.), Bryan Avery (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) and Yamashiro recorded a mark of 2:43.38 to take first, before UCSD notched its only victory of the day, winning the 225 backstroke relay.

    Winning the 225 breaststroke relay was the Air Force team of Justin Day (Jr., Peyton, Colo.), Hammervold and Greg Edmonds (So., Fairfax Station, Va.), clocking in at 2:09.67. Meanwhile, the Falcons took first in the 150 freestyle relay as well, with the team of Dawson, T.J. Cowling (Sr., Newport News, Va.), Stephen Grace (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), Robinson, Chris Morin (So., Crown Point, Ind.) and Day finishing with a mark of 58.80.

     

     

    In the final event of the day, the 800 butterfly relay, the Falcons captured first place as Nick Dixon (Jr., Canton, Mich.), O'Keefe, Avery and Robinson combined for a time of 8:12.29.

    The Air Force men are back in action next weekend, Jan. 12, when they head to Denver for a dual meet, slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
