Falcons Play Grand Canyon Twice This Week
The Air Force men's soccer team will play the Grand Canyon Antelopes twice this week to close out the 2013 regular season. The Falcons, tied for first place in the WAC's East Division, will host GCU on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m., as a make-up for the postponed match on Oct. 5 due to the government shutdown. Then on Friday, Nov. 8, the two teams will meet in Phoenix, Az., beginning at 7 p.m. The match Tuesday at Cadet Soccer Stadium will be streamed live on the Mountain West Digital Network.
The Falcons enter Tuesday's match with a 2-9-5 overall record and a 2-1-5 mark in league play after tying UNLV, 0-0, and defeating Bakersfield, 2-1, last weekend. The Falcons have a five-match unbeaten streak and are tied with Houston Baptist for the lead in the East Division. Grand Canyon is 2-12-1 overall and 1-7 in the WAC.
Falcons Continue Unbeaten Streak
Air Force extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a tie and win at home last weekend. The Falcons played UNLV to a 0-0 draw on Friday as freshman goalie Jake Schenk notched the first shutout of his career with a career-high nine saves.
On Sunday, junior Gus Jensen and sophomore Connor Dunbaker each scored the first goal of his career as the Falcons posted a 2-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on senior day at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Dunbaker opened the scoring in the 24th minute, taking a pass from freshman Blake Elder and placing a shot from 10 yards out past Bakersfield keeper Anthony Perez. Jensen, who joined the varsity club this season and was playing in just his seventh game for Air Force, made it 2-0 with his first career goal in the 69th minute after a deflected shot by a CSUB defender went right to Jensen and he beat Perez from about 25 yards out. It was Jensen's first career shot on goal.
Falcons Tied For First in Division
The Falcons are tied with Houston Baptist for the WAC's East Division lead with 11 points. Air Force, which is tied for fourth overall in the WAC, has a game in hand against HBU, as the Huskies have only one game left, hosting Kansas City on Saturday.
WAC Tourney Coming to the Academy
The Falcons will host the 2013 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 14. Three games will be played on the 14th, with the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 15 and the championship game at noon on Sunday, Nov. 17. For more information visit www.wacsports.com.
Falcons Picked Second in WAC Preseason Rankings
The Falcons were picked to finish second in the WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Bakersfield was predicted to win the conference by the eight league coaches. Air Force senior Caleb Downey was selected as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year and fellow senior Brian Klazura joined Downey on the preseason all-WAC team.
Back to the WAC
After spending the last 14 years playing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the Falcons will begin play, once again, in the Western Athletic Conference in 2013. Air Force was a member of the WAC from 1996-98 before breaking off with seven other schools to form the Mountain West Conference. The MWC did not offer men's soccer, however, so the Falcons moved to the MPSF.
Luke Villamaria Named Academic All-District
Air Force sophomore midfielder Luke Villamaria was named to the Capital One Academic All-District men's soccer team, released recently by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Villamaria earned first-team District VII honors for Division I programs and will now be placed on the Academic All-America ballot. He has a 3.79 gpa and is majoring in biology.
